About Gerd Kurz and The Tournament
Gerd Kurz, founder of Precision Camera Inc., was a sponsor and staunch supporter of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers. An evangelist for the Atlantic Canadian motion picture industry, Kurz was a strong supporter of the Atlantic Film Festival and its aims to develop the industry’s grass roots through events such as ViewFinders: International Film Festival for Youth as well as open up the world to the region’s talent and passions. In 1998 Kurz opened an office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, to cement his commitment to Atlantic Canada’s industry. Gerd Kurz passed away in 2003, at the age of 61.
To commemorate his life and passion, the Atlantic Film Festival Association, in partnership with Precision Camera Inc., commissioned the Gerd Kurz Memorial Golf Tournament in 2003 – a charity golf tournament aiming to community building and youth-outreach initiatives like alFresco filmFesto – an outdoor summer film screening series on Halifax’s waterfront – and youth-oriented educational activities such as ViewFinders.
Since 2002, ViewFinders has been offering unique educational opportunities for youth through hands on learning with tangible outcomes. Each year, ViewFinders facilitates the production for over 10 youth-made films through free summer film academies and march break camps, and provides the venue for Atlantic Canadian youth-made films to gain critical guidance, compete for scholarship opportunities and ultimately find their audience. In addition to a five-day Festival, four days of programming at the Atlantic Film Festival, and various film camps and academies, Festival In A Van carries the essence of ViewFinders to over 22 rural communities each year, from Digby, Nova Scotia to St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Through the Gerd Kurz Memorial Golf Tournament, the Atlantic Film Festival aims to continue engaging community events such as alFresco, increase funding for classes from across Atlantic Canada to experience the educational opportunity of ViewFinders, provide a venue for Atlantic Canadian youth to develop and display their creative works of film and extend the cultural reach of programs such as Festival In a Van.
